Balanced Menstrual Cycle Massage Oil
For the week before, and the week during.
Menstrual discomfort is not a single problem. It is a cluster of overlapping conditions — hormonal fluctuation, prostaglandin-driven cramping, poor pelvic circulation, fluid retention, and the neurological load of chronic low-grade pain — that conventional approaches typically address one at a time, if at all.
This formula was built to address all of them simultaneously, through three parallel mechanisms: hormonal regulation, circulatory warming, and nervous system support.
It is designed for use in the lower back — the primary access point for the uterine and pelvic nerve network — with heat application to drive deeper penetration of the active compounds.
How this formula works
Hormonal regulation
- Vitex Agnus Castus (Chaste Tree) Fruit Oil — the regulatory centre of this formula. Contains compounds that interact with dopamine receptors in the pituitary gland, indirectly supporting progesterone production and reducing the oestrogen-progesterone imbalance that underlies most PMS symptoms: breast tenderness, mood volatility, irregular cycles, and fluid retention. One of the most clinically studied botanical compounds for female hormonal health.
- Geranium (Pelargonium Graveolens) Oil — known in clinical aromatherapy as a female hormonal balancer; supports the adrenal system's regulation of oestrogen; simultaneously promotes lymphatic circulation to reduce the lower-body fluid retention common in the days before menstruation
- Black Cumin (Nigella Sativa) Seed Oil — contains thymoquinone; documented anti-inflammatory action that specifically targets prostaglandin synthesis — the primary biochemical driver of menstrual cramping (dysmenorrhoea). Addresses pain at its source rather than masking the sensation.
Circulatory warming and pain relief
- Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) Root Oil — generates localised warmth that promotes blood flow to the pelvic region; particularly effective for cramping associated with poor circulation or cold constitution; helps facilitate the smooth passage of menstrual flow by reducing vascular constriction.
- Sandalwood New Caledonia (Santalum Austrocaledonicum) Oil — deeply nourishing and anti-spasmodic; supports smooth muscle relaxation in the uterine and pelvic area; complements Ginger's warming action with a calming, sustained effect.
Nervous system and emotional support
- Vetiver (Vetiveria Zizanioides) Root Oil — deeply grounding; one of the most effective natural compounds for anxiety and insomnia associated with PMS; its dense, earthy quality stabilises the nervous system during hormonal fluctuation, reducing the heightened emotional reactivity of the premenstrual phase
- Jasmine Sambac (Jasminum Sambac) Flower Oil — antidepressant and deeply relaxing; elevates mood during the menstrual phase; used for centuries across South and Southeast Asia for emotional support during difficult physical states; addresses the low mood and withdrawal that often accompany menstruation.
- Sandalwood — already active in the circulatory layer; its secondary role is neurological — calming the central nervous system and reducing the fatigue that compounds menstrual discomfort
The carrier base
- Apricot Kernel Oil (Prunus Armeniaca) — lightweight and rapidly absorbed; carries active compounds through the skin efficiently; additionally nourishes skin that becomes sensitised and dry during hormonal fluctuation.
- Natural Vitamin E (Dl-α-Tocopherol) — antioxidant stability; protects the formula's bioactive integrity and supports skin recovery
An honest note
This formula is appropriate for PMS, primary dysmenorrhoea, and light or irregular menstrual flow. It is a complementary therapy — it works with the body's own hormonal cycles, not against them.
It is not appropriate for conditions involving structural pathology — uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, pituitary tumours, or endometriosis — without prior consultation with a qualified aromatherapist and medical professional. If you have any of these conditions, please seek professional guidance before use.
Who this is for
Women experiencing PMS symptoms: mood changes, breast tenderness, bloating, fatigue, or irritability in the days before menstruation. Women with painful periods caused by poor circulation or prostaglandin excess. Women with irregular or light cycles seeking gentle hormonal support. Safe for use during menstruation.
How to use
Apply a suitable amount to the lower back. Massage gently until absorbed. Follow immediately with a warm towel compress for 1–2 minutes — the heat drives the active compounds deeper into the tissue and enhances the circulatory warming effect. Use 2–3 times daily, including during menstruation.
For external use only. Patch test before first use. Not recommended during pregnancy. If you have uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, or other gynaecological conditions, consult a qualified aromatherapist before use. Keep out of reach of children.
